Best Linux for my setup?

Hello all

As MicroSLOP's war on its users keeps getting harder and harder to avoid, my Jellyfin server needs to switch as well as my main PC.

My Jellyfin server just needs the minimum, being able to have a desktop and run a browser. So don't need the complete Fedora i run on my main here. And therefor also just as light a desktop as possible.

The setup is:

Intel i5-7500
16 GB RAM
Nvidia GTX 650 2GB

For now 3 4TB Toshiba NAS drives. They're a not a problem.

I have a little NMVe drive as boot, only 256GB.

What distro will run Jellyfin best on this?

It only has to connect on local network.

Anything that is based on Debian is good, since we provide debian packages for Jellyfin server. Linux Mint, or Linux Mint Debian Edition is probably a good starting point.

Yes, i remember Debian as the first distro i tried 20 years ago, but ended up on Mint.

Remembered after posting this question here, that Fedora has a server version, that is stripped for everything.

Would that work installing maybe XFCE and run Jellyfin on it?

Jellyfin server does not care about the DE, so chose whatever you want.

The great thing about Linux is that you can customize it to your heart's content. As long as you know what you are doing. Pretty much any distro can be made to run XFCE.

This just needs to work. It needs to serve intertainment - not headaches

Another note to my setup, i know it has mostly to do with Linux - how good will it work reading of NTFS?

I'm planing to slowly move around, i have a 2TB drive i can use to swap around and format to EXT4.

The experience is OK with NTFS disks. I wouldn't recommend using Jellyfin with media on a NTFS disk. There are some quirks with how access permissions work on NTFS disks that make it difficult for beginners to give Jellyfin permission to read them.

I recommend you put in the work upfront to move your data around to so you can convert this disk to ext4 sooner rather than later.

Yes i remember hearing about that the first time i was looking into it last year, during the whole Win10 debacle.

I will start moving the files around, so i can get at least one of the drives formatted to EXT4 to begin with, then install Fedora Server and then get the rest moved around and formatted.
