I posted a suggestion in the Jellyfin suggestions form and saw there was a notification of complete with a one line answer statig this was already possible. Can someone explain how this works?

    https://features.jellyfin.org/posts/2914...er-playbak

    Description
Allow the admin or, with permissions, certain users to start/control playback for another user logged into a different device.

My example is trying to put content on for my agin mother who is losing the ability to operate remotes and understand "buttons". I have to manually begin content on her TV cable box app directly from her room on her TV. If I can use my admin/account and begin playback for her account remotely that would make it possible to give her something to watch while I'm not physically with her. Would work well for kids or video displays or any host of pissibilities.

This functionality already exists as the “remote control” feature in the cast menu.

What OS is the cable box running?

My understanding is the remote control is available to the admin via the web interface and can control clients that support it via websocket. IIRC, other web based clients will work with this (JMP, Tizen, WebOS, Android), and Android TV. Not sure about Roku, and almost certainly not Swiftfin in its current state.

I will do some testing when I get home to try to figure out the specifics of how this works.

The client is an android cable TV box (which I asked for help getting set up previously). I'd like to be able to fire things up remotely as my mom is losing more cognative function when it comes to things like using remote controls for the TV now. If I can begin playback remotely when not physically in the building that would be helpful. The only "cast" function I can see is sending my client to another display device.

You do NOT need to be on the same network.  My cellphone on cellular data could "Play On" my Android TV devices on my home WiFi.

It is very finicky, though, and the Jellyfin app had to be running and logged in for the device to be listed.

OK but you are playing from your user account on your user account? I'm wanting to push a play command to another user account at a remote location. Right now through the dashboard I can stop playback of another user or send them a message. I'm looking to be able to control the start playing of their media.

I don't believe that is possible. Only for your own user. You COULD log in as your mother's user on your device/browser to start playback on her device.

Maybe not incorrect, but more like misunderstood. I'm not sure if a user-to-user remote control would make it into Jellyfin.

BUT, what you could do is setup something like ErsatzTV. It is a "live TV" channel in that you manually feed content to from Jellyfin.

I spoke with the devs a bit more, and did more testing.  Looks like you CAN remote control another user's device in the same manner I described above.  Still requires the Jellyfin app to be open already on the "target" device.

Heck, there is even a setting for it.  I don't go into the menu often and completely forgot about it.
