    Hello all!

I've been using Jellyfin server for quite a while now, for movies & shows. It works great, everybody loves it. Family uses it constantly.

Well today I got the bright idea to add a comic book library to get the kids reading more. They're super psyched about it.

I added a new library "Books" type, called it "Comics", then loaded it with a title folder full of cbr/cbz files.

The problem is that when I use the Jellyfin app on Roku, it black-screens as soon as I select the "Comics" library (before I even get to select the comic title and then a particular volume). It works fine when I do it in a web-brower or even from the Jellyfin app on my phone (which I suspect is actually just a browser window, but I digress...).

So what's going on here? Why the black screen? When this happens, I can hit the directional buttons on the Roku remote and I can hear that it's responding by the navigation noise. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Edit: Oh! I forgot to mention... I have tried setting up the library with only one cbr/cbz file, to make sure it wasn't an issue with too many files or some such. This resulted in the same blackscreen as soon as the library "Comics" is selected. I wish Roku had a decent web browser, then I could just do this through that, as a work-around, but noooo. The Jellyfin app is my only option, it seems... Oh yeah, it works fine in the Jellyfin app on Xbox too. This problem ONLY exists in the Jellyfin app on Roku.

I'm going to ask around, but I am pretty sure that the Roku app does not support ebooks. MAYBE audiobooks, but not ebooks AFAICT.

Well it does. As I said, I am already using it to view cbr/cbz files. As for actual ebook formats like epub, for example? I don't know. There are plugins though.

If you don't know about cbr/cbz files... They're popular formats for comic books. Basically they're zip & rar files full of jpg images, so they're very simple.

But yeah, as stated, I am already using it to properly view comic books in a comic-specific library. Oh yeah, and when you create a new library in Jellyfin, "Books" is one of the available library types, so...

Edit: Wait wait... Are you saying that the Jellyfin Roku app doesn't support what the Jellyfin server supports (books)? I'm sorry if I misunderstood/misunderstand..?

Correct. Jellyfin for Roku does not support any books other than audio books. File format doesn't matter; cbz, epub, txt, pdf, etc. If it isn't audio, Roku doesn't support it.

We would need the server to provide the individual images as a response to an API call. We can't unzip/unrar on your Roku device. If the server provided the images, we could probably come up with something.
    🤘 Enjoy

Interesting. Well that's that then. Thank you so much for explaining so precisely! Now I know I'm barking up the wrong tree, lol. At least it works on the tablet too!
