External connections with VPN

Hi everyone, my setup is as follows:

• Jellyfin running on a Win10 desktop with 16TB of storage attached to my local network. 
  
• DuckDNS subdomain points at a Caddy instance to enable external connections without simply handing out my IP and opening ports. 
  
• I use a VPN to semi-anonymize myself online including downloading things. 
  
  

Whenever the VPN is on, the external connections don't seem to work. I can still access the server on my own network by using my local address rather than the dedicated domain. I tried setting up tunneling on my VPN's settings but that doesn't seem to work consistently. Is there anything I can do to allow myself to still upload/download files behind the VPN while users are accessing the service from outside the local network?

what vpn do you use? some vpn providers have an option to download their openvpn files in order to set them up manually. for example, i use fastvpn by namecheap. i had to go to account.fastvpn.com and download the openvpn udp files. it might be different for each vpn provider but you can look up on google "vpnprovider openvpn files" and get them from your vpn provider. then once you download them its usually a zip file so u unzip it. then go to the openvpn website and download their connect client. once you do that run the installer. then follow this guide to edit your openvpn file: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SEA2T_ZXJ9w&t=313s . keep in mind that to edit the openvpn file you must open them in your file manager and edit it with something like visual studio code. then you can follow the guide.
