I wasn't sure where to post this, but I figured Troubleshooting fits these issues best.

Just upgraded to Jellyfin 10.10.3 running on docker in Ubuntu 22.04.  Have an Nvidia 1070 handling transcoding duties.  This has worked well for the last 9 months, previously I was running Jellyfin on my home NAS, a Synology DS1621+.  I could transcode 1080p on the NAS, but it would usually choke on anything 4k.  That was OK, though, since I was able to DirectPlay most if not all 4k content.

I can provide full server details if necessary...

    Media library is composed of 70% 1080p SDR and 30% 4k HDR (HDR10, HDR10+, & DoVi) titles.

    My primary viewing environment is

Nvidia Shield Pro (2017) (I believe not DV compatible)
    Denon AVR-X4500H
    Epson 5050UB (Not DV compatible)

With the prior version of Jellyfin, I used LibVLC and it was able to play Dolby Vision files on this equipment (I believe it stripped it down to HDR10), but now I just see a black screen and hear the audio.  The HDR10 titles still play properly.  I used ffmpeg to convert one of the DoVi titles to HDR10 and now that file works, but I'd like to avoid doing this on 30+ titles if possible.  Also, I'm able to transcode the DV files on the fly just fine, but it converts it to 4k SDR.  I'd like to take advantage of the Epson's HDR output so I'd also like to avoid this as a solution.

    1. If I get an Nvidia Shield Pro 2019, will it be able to open the DV files ?
    2. Will a later version of Jellyfin be able to transcode DV to HDR10?
    3. Do I need to convert all of my DV files to HDR? Any options I'm missing?

My secondary environment is a TLC (Roku) 4k TV that is Dolby Vision compatible and I use the Jellyfin app installed on the TV.  I rarely use this to watch content, so I'm not sure if this was an issue before, but I think I was able to watch HDR and Dolby Vision without issue.

Dolby Vision files play as HDR instead of Dolby Vison (not sure if this was always the case).

Since the upgrade, anytime I try to DirectPlay an HDR10 or DV file, the content starts, the HDR logo pops up, audio plays, video looks good.....
It will play for 3-10 seconds and then a quick pop-up appears that's impossible to read (I think it says playback stopped, but it's so fast) and it stops playback and goes back into the Jellyfin menu.  Transcoding these files to 4k SDR or 1080 SDR is fine and works well.  There are no errors in the ffmpeg or jellyfin server logs that I can see.

ffmpeg reports '[q] command received. Exiting.'
jellyfin reports 'Playback stopped reported by app "Jellyfin Roku" "2.2.5"'

I can upload the full log, but there doesn't appear to be anything unusual.

As above, I'd like to avoid transcoding the 4k HDR files to SDR.  I've tried multiple file combinations (DV, HDR10), audio formats, etc.  I've also tinkered with every setting in the Jellyfin app.  Transcoding works great, but DirectPlay doesn't work.

    Thanks!

Can you share your full server log, and any ffmpeg logs you have, via pastebin?

And provide the full media info, from the Jellyfin UI, for these videos.

Media info is pasted below. Empire Strikes Back is the only title I tested that worked on the TCL Roku.

When I enable "external player" on the Nvidia shield, I'm able to watch the Dolby Vision titles on VLC without issue, but I'd like to avoid that, but I guess it's a workaround for now.

For the Shield, DV 7.6 should be falling back to DV 8.1 or HDR10. But this is a known issue in Exoplayer that Google has not addressed. The Roku should as well, but I don't have an HDR TV to test with. Other users have also reported DV 7.6 issues on Rokus.

Empire Strikes Back is straight HDR10, so I'm not surprised that it works. Casino should also work on the Roku. Other than having DTS audio instead of Dolby, they are both HDR10. Even the audio difference shouldn't matter. They are both transcoded to AAC 5.1.

All the struggles you are having is the reason I wrote this guide.

    https://forum.jellyfin.org/t-converting-...n-to-hdr10

And converted all my DV content to just plain HDR10. Otherwise, I don't have a solution for you. Convert to HDR10 or use a mini PC as your client running Kodi.
