I don't have anything to add to this discussion in general but I wanted to again express my appreciation for those who work hard on JF to make it pretty damn awesome. Even if there are sometimes bumps in the road I look forward to the next release, the new features and the overal welcoming community around JF.

(2026-04-10, 09:09 AM)Ghostface69 Wrote: I’d want to create an update/upgrade guide for Windows 11 users regarding the upgrade from Jellyfin version 10.10.7 to 10.11.8.

I have the standard categories like Movies and TV Shows. In Jellyfin 10.10.7, I had uploaded documentaries to the Movies and TV Shows category, and everything works fine. I don’t have any home videos or music, but I do have books. In total, I have 2,500 movies, 460 TV series, and 110 books.

I’ve always been cautious about updates, and this is now my first attempt to upgrade from 10.10.7 to 10.11.X.

I made a full backup of the Jellyfin server folder beforehand, which is located at C:\Program Data\Jellyfin\ on my system.
I also use Aomei Backup to create weekly incremental backups to a separate SSD. So I was doubly protected.

I launched the Jellyfin 10.11.8 installer, went through the standard setup, and confirmed the update at the beginning. Then I opened Jellyfin in the browser and watched as a sequence of tasks began. The view is CLI. At the same time, I opened the Task Manager and noticed that system usage wasn’t particularly high during the migration. The whole process took 5 minutes and ended with Jellyfin shutting down and nothing visible in the browser. Shortly after, I restarted Jellyfin via the system tray and was able to access all my content in no time.

    FYI
Update all plugins once after the migration!
Run a full scan of your library once

Everything is working! Thank you very much

After about a week, I found that I could no longer log in to the Jellyfin app or Infuse (both on iOS/tvOS) using my main Jellyfin account (Admin).

The issue was caused by a missing permission for the following files: jellyfin.db / jellyfin.db-shm / jellyfin.db-wal (C:\ProgramData\Jellyfin\Server\data)

In Windows, I had to create a user named “Everyone” for each of these files and select “Full Control” for the permission.
    How to (Windows):
    1. Stop the Jellyfin Server (Taskbar or Windows Services)
    2. Go to the Jellyfin Server folder (C:\ProgramData\Jellyfin\Server\data)
    3. Right-click on one of the files listed above and then click “Properties”
    4. Select the “Security” tab
    5. Click “Edit”
    6. In the new window, click “Add”
    7. In the “Object name” field, simply type ‘Everyone’ and then click “Check Names”
    8. If no error message appears and the “Everyone” user is underlined, you have done everything correctly and can close the window by clicking OK
    9. Now select the “Everyone” user and grant them “Full Control” or select all options under the “Permit” column, then click OK on all windows until you see your folder again.
    10. Repeat this for all the files mentioned above.
    11. Then restart your Jellyfin server, and everything should be working again.

I hope this helps the developers fix this in the future.

Your attitude stinks.  There is no such thing as bullet-proof software.  You definitely don't speak for everyone.  Security is a very real priority for others so you can rant all you want about not caring re:security.  I did not notice any issues with 10.10.7 or 10.10.8.  These "zero-day issues" you describe do not affect everyone.

While his attitude might be out of place, is it really hard to understand the underlying annoyance piling up for some?

A usecase jellyfin worked perfectly fine for for years has suddenly with the update to 10.11.x been nuked out of existence.
Yet the devs still (after how long a year?) don't even seem to acknowledge it and pretend it's just some minor thing barely affecting anything.

At the same time they press on how important it is to update, those security issues for the most part are easily "bandaided" for 10.10.7 by removing management rights for users and not giving out access to random people but thats beside the point.

Again sub folder sorted libraries which worked perfectly fine before 10.11.x are FULLY  BROKEN,
it's not a "slower" it's a you won't be able to play these videos at all because the library won't open within the next few hours. The issue is easy to replicate as well.

Add a folder with sub-folders as library [youtube] -> [Tech] [Docs] [Stream] [Gameplay] [Study][Music]... -> And inside those have the channel folders with the actual files.
With only a few thousand it won't open anymore, infinite loading.

This worked perfectly fine for years!
That's not a small degredation it's a "we removed/broke this functionality/usecase but pretend everything works as before".

Why can't anyone from the team at least make a statement like 'yep we see this issue it's on our radar' or 'we decided to drop this usecase sorry make your own fork'?
Instead all you get is people with 50 movies and one movie library spamming everything works perfectly fine.

Overall i'm certain even the ones complaining are very greatful for the work the devs put in and that they keep working on the project <3 but this doesn't change the fact that the server project got half castrated from one big release to another without any dev mentioning or at least acknowledging it on git or the forum.

Why are you using Windows 7? Is this a stand-alone server o a machine that does many other things?

I would recommend a different os windows 7 is not safe to connect to the internet as it has not had any security updates for years. I would suggest something like "linux mint xfce" or if you have the money upgrade your system to a mini pc off amazon. You use to be able to get a dissent one for a server $100 to $200 have not check what there going for now.

100%! This is spot on, 10.11 is fundamentally broken and there doesn’t seem to be any acknowledgment that it is actually on the radar to fix. I did try 10.11 a few releases ago but as above it just doesn’t work right now for around half my content. It’s not that I don’t want to upgrade, I really do but can’t if it’s not going to work at least 90% as well as 10.10 does.

    no, this is not true.
devs are aware of it and made statement on jf's reddit sub too about how recent releases primarily focused on fixing long-standing security holes than improving performance. the fix you are waiting for will be applied on upcoming v10.12.

be patient. after all, being able to use a secure server is more important than loading libraries in a shorter time.

It's 100% true, I've not seen anywhere any confirmation that the HV&P is on the radar to be fixed (feel free to show me a link that proves otherwise).
As the previous poster said, it isn't that the libraries take a long time to load - it's that they don't load - they're non-functional. Restoring this functionality isn't "improving performance" as you call it, it's fixing what was completely broekn. This is exactly why the previous poster said, people just make out it's a minor issue. It isn't. I'd suggest that a media server that isn't able to serve media is more of a fundamental issue. The security issue, simply don't expose it online and use it locally only until it's fixed. The inability of the media server to serve media, no amount of not exposing it to the internet is going to fix that!
Jellyfin 10.11.5 - soon to rollback to 10.10.7
Hopeful of a home videos and photos fix so I can come back to 10.11.x

Or put it behind a VPN, which is what you should do for anything you don't want the entire internet to have access to.  Just assume that anything that provides acess to your network will have security vulnerabilities exposed sooner or later, and act accordingly.

I would absolutely upgrade if it were just a bit slower, but Jellyfin for Kodi can't even successfully sync my library on 10.11.x.  It's not my intention to dogpile on the developers, but I will echo the sentiment that this is more than a minor regression.  I'm eager for the release of 10.12.x, and hope for the best, but I will wait for others to confirm that everything is fixed before moving on from 10.10.7.
