Sorry for a noob question.... just switched to JellyFin from Plex and running into some metadata issues.   Plex looked up ALL of my shows and movies correctly.

To update Plex / Jellyfin, I've just copied directories with show .mkv files into the tv or movies directory.  I don't really have any idea how the show info is looked up. I assume by the filename, but maybe something else.

With JellyFin, some of my directories were recognized and the IMDB id was used to populate the episode data and the series info.
Shetland was recognized correctly.... tt2396135 but Slow Horses was not recognized.  I can find Slow Horses in IMDB and come up with: tt5875444.

I want to find the easiest way to have JellyFin pull in the correct meta data.  If I manually look up the IMDB id how can I add it to JellyFin and have JellyFin re-scan based on the newly added IMDB id?

I found the 'metadata edit' page for Slow Horses, added tt5875444 save it and clicked on the rescan menu item.. but it's been 15 minutes and Slow Horses still has no pics or descriptions.

What's the best way to update the shows that don't have any / much info on them?

Jellyfin does not use IMDB for ANY metadata. TMDB is our default metadata provider and they map IMDB IDs to TMDB IDs. But sometimes the mapping is wrong or doesn't exist.

Try using the TMDB ID for Slow Horses. 95480

The format for including that in the folder name would be "Slow Horses [tmdbid-95480]".
