I'm new to using Jellyfin and the main reason I switched from Plex was having an easy way to access to my library when the internet goes down.  Now that I'm going on a plane trip next week, I'm downloading a bunch of movies/shows on Netflix and such.  I wish I could do that same in Jellyfin.

You can, but not with the official apps. If you have an Android phone, check out Findroid for video and Finamp for music. Both have offline modes and download management.

I read about using that but that won't be good for my kids to use. Hoping that version 10.9 incorporates this. I'm doing my best not to get Plex Pass.

You can download media now with the official apps, but you need a separate player to play them since the official apps don't have an offline mode. AFAIK 10.9 isn't going to have an offline mode.

If your client is an Android phone, Findroid has built in download and playback management built in.

For other web based clients (browser, Android, iOS), the "..." context menu has the download button. You'd need a separate video player installed on your device. Like VLC, MPV, or MPC-BE.

If you have iOS devices (iPad, etc.) I would recommend using Streamyfin.

Another option is VLC player, but you have to enable the DLNA plugin in your Jellyfin server to get VLC to access your library.

Are the devs thinking of incorporating this feature?

    Maybe for the future.

If you need it now, check out 3rd party clients.
If you're on Android, check out Findroid as it has offline support.
