    Hello everyone,

I recently upgraded the CPU on my home server and i was wondering if i will see any difference in transcoding times and/or quality if i upgrade my GPU.

I currently have a Xeon E5-2650 v4 (was a 5820K) and a 1050Ti with 24GB of ram (dont ask how i ended up with that amount, i wonder myself).

I was wondering what kind of difference i would see if i upgraded to a 3070 for example, is it even worth considering i could get one used for 250 Euros?

    Thanks in advance.

Stepping up in GPUs will let you handle more, concurrent 4K transcodes and help with HDR tone mapping. But if you don't have any 4K media or only need to be able to handle 1-2, 4K transcodes, save your money and stick with the 1050Ti until you outgrow it or it dies.

My suggestion is like the above and I will add that finding out what is a great GPU today for what you believe will be your future use case and then watching those GPUs in the various markets in case a killer deal pops up would be my way. If you don't NEED it today but will want it later and you can check retailers, Marketplace, facebook groups or what ever works well in your area, go that route. Set aside some cash for the price point you'd be happy hitting so you can pull the trigger.

I've been amazed at some of the things I've found on Facebook Marketplace in just the last year. Not all tech specific but I've found multiple free good quality TV sets, some very useable furniture and even some wonderful people who've just donated a few small items. I've not spent more than $20 and that was for an 8-port POE switch.

I do have some 4K media but not a lot, most is 1080p (80% of my media). But i do have 4-5 users, mostly my family, me and some very close friends but we havent noticed any slowdowns whatsoever. I do want to do a little more with my GPU tho (nextcloud recognize and things like that), but to be honest the 1050Ti has stood up the challenge. If there is no actual benefit i think im going to stick with it until it cant no longer. Thank you for your reply!

I was going the used route anyway since the new market, especially in greece, is a mess. I will keep an eye for any killer deals but im mostly aiming for as new (as in generation) as possible so i dont have to upgrade anytime soon. The 5000 series is a no go in terms of used right now, and the 4000 is a bit messy in pricing still. Sadly i cant go the AMD route (as i did with my personal computers) because i have already setup so many things for the existing nvidia card (drivers which are a pain and application setups in various things on my server).

Thank you a lot for your reply!

I believe (and others with far superior knowledge can confirm/deny) that the Intel ARC GPUs are the preffered platform for transcoding. And I believe you don't need the most recent as, to a certain point, the newer designs give more diminishing returns. I'd say to find the model(s) that are best recommended and then watch for those. You might even find new old stock being cleared out or some other deals in that manner, as opposed to constantly chasing the latest and greatest gaming GPU.

Yeah ARC was my first though when i firstly put a GPU but due to budget i just used my old 1050Ti i had. Since the GPU is integrated to many services it will be a long proccess to re configure everything for ARC.

When i say as recent as possible i mean in terms of used, like i would not go for a 2000 series GPU but if i see a good deal on a 4060 i will pick that. Brand new is out of the question due to budget lol

I am pretty sure ARC is what is recommended though, despite any new configuring it may require. It's not just about horse power but compatibility. I'd look into what is recommened by those whov'e put in that resarch first before setting my sights on a specific brand/make. Just my thoughts though. You have to do what you feel comfortable doing.
