I'm a complete networking noob, so I would like to know how to enable remote access (and securely) to my Jellyfin server, which is running on Windows 11.  I just want to enable me and/or my wife be able to access the server to either watch a movie from a hotel (or anywhere that's not home), or download movies to prepare for an upcoming plane ride back home.

From other discussions, walkthroughs, etc. I've seen the conversation is mostly centered around Linux terminal commands, which are of no help to me whatsoever in my use case.

I'd be happy to assemble the discussion, info, tips/tricks, etc. and turn it into an "official" walkthrouh on how to do it for Windows users.

If you need more hardware specifics let me know.

    ISP: Spectrum ~400 Mb/s Up/Down
    Ehternet/WiFi Router: Netgear Nighthawk AC2300
PC Server: Dell Inspiron Mini-Tower, 12th Gen i7, 16GB Ram, UHD 770 integrated Graphics, 250GB SSD, connected by ethernet to router, media currently on 3.5" HDD (I have started small for proof of concept before later expansion)

So I was reading more into my router's functions and it has a VPN service that works with OpenVPN and provides the VPN profile/cert. Could I just enable the VPN, setup a VPN profile on my iOS devices with OpenVPN, and access Jellyfin as if I were at home?

Using the OpenVPN built into your router is an option. One that many people use. And it would allow you to access your home resources as if you were home.

As long as you don't have remote TV clients (Android TV, Roku, etc.) that can't install OpenVPN clients, this may be all you need.
