hey.  merry new year.  i've been happily using jellyfin with the server running on my me mini truenas scale nas and the client on my roku box but i'd like to replace the roku box with open source something while keeping a somewhat similar experience.  ie simple remote control, a couple streaming services, and of course jellyfin.

i feel like im going in circles between different ideas and would very much appreciate your big picture thoughts on any or all of this:
    - just using a browser on a machine with hdmi to my tv - but then interface with a browser always?  maybe this is not such a bad idea it would solve everything except for the simple remote.
    - jellyfin media server on my ras pi with docker - but then how to handle simple remote, yt, fandango, etc.
    - and then related, i think i read i can use my jellyfin android app to cast/control a jellyfin client on my own server?  as opposed to roku which didn't expose the client.
    - kodi on docker? still new to this so still learning but i imagine there is a universal remote that would work and i can run the jellyfin client on kodi.
    - looked a bit into stremio but that doesn't seem to be right

and as always.  thx to the devs.  love jellyfin.

I would recommend LibreElec on at Raspberry pi 5 (if you dont have media in hevc and av1, then pi 4 is fine)

Add the Jellyfin repo and use JellyCon, and now you can play content on the box from whatevery jellyfin device you use (As far as i know).
LibreElec is with kodi, so there is many addons for services etc. you can enable DLNA on it, so if youtube or others support that, then you can use that.

My 2 raspberry pi 4 with LibreElec is wired for best experience :-)
Benefit is, you are not stuck with LibreElec, you can find other way if you want, but this is pretty much straight forward and Open Source :-)

thanks for your reply.  i was just beginning to settle on trying kodi so your reply is encouraging.  i'm going to try the media player on a headless pi4 8GB w/ alpine/docker first. But LibreElec is a good idea idea i forgot about.  no hevc or av1 so will see.  Yeah agree on wiring.

Then it should work perfectly, you just need to enter settings of the JellyCon addon and remember to set a wanted name to be displayed on your devices when clicking "play on".

You can also set settings for subtitles, audio etc., and you should also check settings of LibreElec, but it works great with Jellyfin :-D

thought id do a quick followup here while i'm visiting the site.  i never saw email notifications so apologies for no reply.  i ended up buying an old mac mini, installing linux mint xfce, jellyfin media player and cant be happier.  BT keyboard / mouse and hdmi to the tv.  sure its different from a normal remote control experience but roku can kiss my privacy agreement.  plus bash scripts whereever are a plus.  those ras pis as fun as they are just aren't enough imo for decent video experience.  so between the nas and a ten year old but decent media machine, jellyfin finally shines for me.  got all my old music on it and its become what i was hoping for.
