SOLVED: Can't play HDR DV HEVC MKV files

I'm trying to play an HDR DV HEVC MKV file through both my Chrome browser and also a Google Chromecast w/ Google TV and I'm encountering different problems with each platform.

If I try to play the episode on my Windows PC via Chrome, it appears to transcode the file. I think this is expected because while my LG monitor supports HDR, it does not support Dolby Vision. But when the video plays, it has a very obvious green/purple tint. Is that normal?

Then when I try to play the same file on my LG C1 via the Chromecast which does support HDR and DV, it plays about 2 seconds until it encounters "too many errors and gives up". I checked the logs and couldn't find anything that stuck out, but I guess I don't know what I'm looking for.

When I map a drive to my server that hosts the content, I can play the video file just fine via VLC on my PC. 

My Jellyfin server is on the latest stable Linux Mint with an Nvidia P400 for hardware transcoding.

Any suggestions or things to try to resolve this issue?

I never used hardware acceleration myself and my budget to get a system to do that solely for testing Jellyfin problems is limited (gpus are expensive). So if someone who has more knowledge about hwa can help this user please do so. That aside, I will see what I can do.

it is transcoding to SDR without tonemapping perhaps? use HWA to enable tonemapping when transcoding.

Using VLC directly will either software decode or use hardware decode. It does not transcode itself as it is just a media player. It can tonemap, however.

Are you sure hwa is working?

Please provide the logs of jellyfin ffmpeg.

Most of those HDR/DV specs on TVs are when the video is fed in through the HDMI connections. The support from the SoC running Android/WebOS is a whole other mess.

Thanks for the quick responses, I will go through the steps for that link and see if that helps

I went into the HWA settings and enabled tone mapping, so that fixed the issue with the green/purple tint on the web.
I tried turning off HWA entirely and had the same problem of it playing for 1 second then erroring out on my CCwGTV.

Actually, scratch that, there's still problems playing via the web. When I had HDR disabled on my monitor, it played fine and looked OK. When I enabled HDR, I no longer have the tint issue since I enabled Tone Mapping in the settings, but it definitely doesn't look right compared to playing the file via VLC (w/ or w/o HDR enabled). It's like the blacks are crushed and the colors don't look right.

Ugh. I'll maybe post some pictures when I get a chance and after I go thru the steps in the documentation.

Ok I think I found the issue. I had the setting "downmix to stereo" instead of "direct". That was causing the issue. After switch to direct, I saw the Dolby vision pop up in the corner and it plays fine, no transcoding!
