TL;DR: fixed by setting Google Cast version to Stable via "Settings → Playback → Google Cast version → Stable".

I'm not sure what caused the issue, but after upgrading to 10.11.5 and porting from running jellyfin via systemd on my host system to running 10.11.6 via docker compose, I started being unable to cast to my chromecast. The main symptom was that the TV started to look like it was connecting, but then it showed an error message: “Something went wrong. Try again or cast something new. chromecast.com/help”. Searching this online did not help.

    Detailed Symptoms:
    • Chromecast is on the same LAN/Wi-Fi as the phone and Jellyfin server.
    • In the Jellyfin Android app I still see “Google Cast” as an option and can select the Chromecast.
    • The TV/Chromecast briefly looks like it’s connecting, then shows the error.
    • Casting YouTube works fine, and phone screen casting works as a workaround.
    • Jellyfin itself is reachable normally from other clients on the LAN.

Even using GPT didn't help out of the box, but I sat down and debugged with it for a few hours and eventually found the solution. On the Jellyfin Android app: Settings → Playback → Google Cast version → Stable. After switching to Stable, casting to the classic Chromecast works again immediately.

I was happy to have solved the issue, but one of the downsides of AI debugging is that the solutions don't always get posted to make life easier for others, so I'm writing up the issue / solution in case this helps someone else in the future.
