SOLVED: Jellyfin Media Player Linux never shows subtitles

I managed to get Jellyfin installed and logged in without issues using a live USB with EndeavourOS with the instructions I provided, as you can see here. After some digging around, I found an issue listed on ArchWiki's entry for Jellyfin that may be related to this case.

Some users report that after an update, the web UI does not allow them to log in, and instead shows them the initial setup wizard. To fix this, ensure that in /etc/jellyfin/system.xml the value of isStartupWizardCompleted is set to true.

So you probably want to do something like

sudo -e /etc/jellyfin/system.xml

to change the aforementioned part. If you've never used a terminal text editor before, you probably default to nano.

So, I'd found that file and setting too, but I was worried about not being able to add folders to my library if I skipped it. However when I changed it I saw that Jellyfin had accounted for that and still showed me a nice page asking me to do it. The second quirk after that (which again differed from Flatpak) is that Jellyfin wasn't able to see the /mnt/ folder (even though it was set to 775 with all subfolders at 777). But turns out, that entering the full path manually did actually work and I'm up and running now WITH SUBTITLES, wohoo!

(Some more quirks is that once I switch the Jellyfin Media Player to full screen I can't use the "back" button on my remote to get out of that menu... generally, the back button seems quite unreliable... sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. The Media Player is still the Flatpak version, which I think should be ok.)

Glad you were able to get it sorted, and yes, the flatpak for the client is fine; just as server and web client is when it tends to be problematic. Not sure about the remote though, since I've never tried using one with JMP.
