I have my user settings set to display subtitles "forced only".

I would think this would play the subtitles which appear during a foreign language part of the movie.  For example, I am watching Equalizer 3 in English, and I would expect all of the Italian-spoken segments to come through with subtitles.

    Only they don't.

The only way to get these parts to show subtitles is to set subtitles to "default" or "always play".  But in both of those cases, they are showing up in all movies with the English-spoken parts as well.

Is there something I did or didn't do in the rip of the movies with MakeMKV which is causing this to happen?  I typically select any tracks showing English when I rip the discs, including what I thought were forced subtitle tracks.

Same behavior on the web client and on my Roku client.

Right now if I go in to CC options during playback of Equalizer 3, I see "off", "English - Default - DVDSUB", and "English - DVDSUB".

    Thanks in advance!

Yeah, this usually comes down to how the disc was ripped. Most movies don’t actually include a separate “forced only” subtitle track — instead, the forced lines are flagged inside the full subtitle track. MakeMKV doesn’t always preserve those flags correctly, and sometimes the studios don’t encode them consistently in the first place.
If the forced flags are missing or wrong, Jellyfin/Plex/whatever will treat the track as a normal subtitle track and won’t auto-display just the foreign-language parts. That’s why “Forced only” ends up showing nothing, but “Default” or “Always” works.
