Hello there, great to meet you all.

Iam facing a problem regarding subtitles sync, still new to jellyfin so I thought that Iam doing smthg wrong because alot of people (Reddit, blogs, forms) reported no problems with this topic.

Playing any media with subtitles is not working for me at all, media starts to play once I skip forward every subtitle gets out of sync, this is what I tried.
    • Chang player: VLC, MPV, MX you name it nothing seems to work.
    • Used kodi: tried both jellycon and jellyfin for codi no luck.
    • Change settings: during my search I discovered some suggestions regarding turn on/off some settings (force subtitle, update subtitle plugin, play with hardware acceleration settings) no luck
    • Skip forward/backward: people reported this fixing the problem but didn't work for me.

At the same time alot of people enjoying jellyfin, so what iam missing here, what exactly went wrong?

Any help is appreciated, any comments for any additional information is welcomed, thank you all.

    Below some specs regarding setup.
    Jellyfin ver: 10.9.9
Server specs: dual core 2nd intel i5 CPU, 12gb ram, Intel hd 3000 IGPU

Are the subtitles out of sync when you play the file directly with VLC or MPC? As in not using Jellyfin at all. Also, are the subtitles embedded or external?

No subtitles work great when playing them directly to my knowledge, all subtitles are external (.srt).
I will test some episodes again to see if something is wrong with the content or subtitle files.

I have this problem too, and I found the problem after a quick search on the issue page, unfortunately there is no fix right now  Confounded-face : https://github.com/jellyfin/jellyfin-web/issues/4346.

Does this corresponds to the issue you are having ?
Were you watching your content when transcoding, or were you direct playing it ?

Keep me updated if there is a workaround for the time being.

In the web player if I start a show halfway, transcoding, the subs seem to be a second or two ahead when playing starts. If I skip backwards 10sec, let it buffer, then skip forward 10sec, the subs are in sync

Ah. Yes. I remember that issue. I've been able to reproduce this issue on the limited number of ASS/SRT content I have that fully direct plays. AFAIK, burning in the subtitles is the only available workaround. You can force subtitle burn in.

    @TheDreadPirate
So after checking my media found out that some of my media files are out of sync even when played directly, which is weird.
Also, found out that other media was playing fine even when it was being transcoded, so for the time being this is my problem.
Some of the media will have out-of-sync subtitles, others won't for some reason, keep in mind that both (working - not working) are transcoded.

That's the thing. This issue only happens when everything is direct playing. When the video is direct playing the SRT subtitles are rendered and displayed directly by the client. And how the subtitles are handled depends on the client since Jellyfin uses the built in subtitle renderer. When the video is transcoded the subtitles are burned in by Jellyfin/ffmpeg.

I am also having this issue but for me the worst part is when I am watching a tv series even if I manually sync it it will desync as the episode progresses. It is very annoying.

Intersting, Can you provide additional information?
what solutions did you tried (subtitles software, player change etc)
After trying all these solutions I discovered that my media it self was the problem and not Jellyfin.
