As someone who is working on switching from Plex(or bloatfest as i like to call it) to Jellyfin, my wife and i use the watch together feature(or we did until they axed it) a lot, if you need testers i'm game.

This is such a badly needed feature on android tv clients. bringing it would increase interest from people migrating away from plex.

I'm also eager to do anything I can to help get this out faster, be it testing or even development work. (albeit unlikely to be helpful in the latter since I have minimal Android experience). I made an account here to get email updates on this thread.

I'd be willing to test on shield. I watch movies with a friend nightly using plex, with me on a shield and him on a web browser

I'd be happy to test SyncPlay on the AndroidTV app on my Hisense Google TV -- where the option simply does not appear.
I've already tested SyncPlay in the regular Android app on my Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra and it seemed to work fine. It's curious that it works in the regular Android app but not Android TV (at least not on my Hisense).

It would be awesome if we can use SyncPlay for LiveTV to watch sports with friends or family as well. Is this something that can be possible?

I agree this this is a highly anticipated feature.
Syncplay works more or less when I watch things via Web with others.
Almost everyone I know has some form of Android TV, mostly Amazon Fire TV sticks, and their watching experience is primarily with these devices, but alas no Syncplay.
