Here are a few more logs of recent tests playing media that have failed. Even after the iOS update to 16.6.2.

3 of the 5 ffmpeg logs indicate it tried to transcode but failed. The last two are direct streams (only audio transcoded) and they look fine.

So we should probably figure out why the 3 transcodes fail to start.

What are your server specs? Hardware and OS.

RE: iOS updated to 16.6.1 and now video won't stream - Error 1008 - KodiUser1138 - 2023-10-04

None of the streams played. They all hung and failed. I did more tests last night and looking at the logs a few say there is transcoding happening but nothing actually played. Well 2 trailers attached to 2 movies did play but the movies did not and the TV episode did not.

Specs for the server haven't changed since before this issue began. Running on my main Windows 10 PC, i7-3820 CPU @ 3.60GHz 16GB RAM. Dedicated transcode folder on a separate drive. Gigabit LAN network, 1Gig up internet.

I have streamed all this media just fine through the JF app and the Kodi JF addon at another location, including streaming full Blu-ray MVC MKV 3D rips with Lossless Atmos audio and they played fine on the client side. Things play fine through the JF desktop app.

Just suddenly (seemingly after the iOS update) not very much streams properly to my phone any more. Neither through LAN, wifi on another network of over LTE data. Nothing failed like this before. I was able to watch anything I'd tried previously. But now pretty much nothing. It's odd there no one else reporting this issue.

RE: iOS updated to 16.6.1 and now video won't stream - Error 1008 - KodiUser1138 - 2023-10-04

I did some more testing trying to play the same movie files. I had an issue with my phnoe not sending photos to a green bubble so I did a full shutdown/restart which resolved the photos issue and hoped it might fix the JF issue as well.

The JF logs show either JF begins transcoding and then exits when getting the exit command or just fails with barely a paragraph recorded in the log. On yhe client side seleting the play icon leads to the burffering wheel for a few moments and then nothing happens but the watched status for the media resets to unwatched. This was the same for both selections.

I then tried watching a TV show episode. It began to play for a few minute and then buffered for a couple of minutes. It began playing again and continued for a few minutes before hitting a buffer again. This show previously streamed with no issues to my iPhone.

I also tried connecting to a friend's JF server from a completely different location than mine. Tried playing the same media, had the same results. I haven't accessed the logs from his server to see what they say yet though. My buddy ran out of storage on his phone and deleted a bunch of apps including JF so I can't get him to test if his streaming is still working at the moment.

If you haven't already, submit an issue to both of these gits. I'm not sure if there is anyway around this. Is your friend also using an iPhone 8? Its possible this is specific to iPhone 8's + iOS 16.6.1. Otherwise we would have a lot more iPhone users in here with this problem.

No my buddy is a green bubble guy. I think his phone is a Samsung? But as noted he's unable to put the app on his phone at the moment (too many NJPW digital trading cards or something).

Updated to iOS 16.7.1 and still no playback of most media.

just an observation

all the logs on post #21 show media which has DTS audio (all but 1 is DTSX)

i have a device in particular that fails on DTS, it is not iOS, but is it possible this is specific to a codec?

I've tried numerous media with different audio and video codecs. Almost all have failed since my first posting. I tried HEVC with AAC 5.1 audio for a TV show episode and the audio played, no video. No ability to stop the playback either, had to close the app.

I'm also trying media I know played previously for logging. Media that should work and does on every other method I've tested. Only other place a lot of this media fails to playback is within the Chrome browser webpage.

I'll add again that I've tested with 2 different JF servers, not just my own local. If anyone has their own server they are willing to allow me to connect with under a user you create just for me I'd gladly test that and report the results as well. This seems to be an iPhone issue or at least iPhone 8 with iOS 16.6X issue.
