i figured it out!!!!
- created new admin account by going to the server url from my phone instead of my laptop
- used those credentials to log into jellyfin from my laptop
- went through server setup again
- turned off autorefresh for movie and tv libraries
- SUCCESS!!!!!
i'm kind of embarrassed that (1) the fix ended up being so simple and (2) i didn't think to try this earlier... but oh well. live and learn, i guess.
