Buffering on Remote Connection - PantherGuyMan - 2025-10-04
Hello Jellyfin Forms. Long time lurker, first time poster.
I've been a happy user of Jellyfin for a little over 2 years now, and have absolutely loved it. Having only done local access in that time, I've recently tried moving into remote access for my Windows 10 server. I've been spending time away from home more often recently and want to access my server outside of my local network. I even bought some more Nvidia Shields for the occasions.
Since I've made this switch, I've noted an anomaly. Anytime I try to play certain HEVC-encoded media, it simply will not play without constant stuttering. Not all HEVC content is like this, only certain specific ones. This is when direct streaming HEVC content with no transcoding. The streaming device can either be hard wired or wireless connection, it does not make a difference. I've connected everything remotely with Tailscale, and as far as I can tell the network speed is nearly unaffected. Connections at both locations are just under 1 gigabit down and up. At home, no issues and all is working as it should. This only happens when connecting out of my local network.
I've tried disabling transcoding completely since other posts point to this being a possible cause, to no avail. I monitored windows task manager while this happened and saw no spikes of any kind in the system, from either the drives nor the processors. I appreciate any assistance that can be provided.

CPU: Intel Xeon E5-2697 V4
RAM: 32GB DDR4
GPU: Intel ARC A380
Boot Drive: Crucial 500GB SSD
Media Drives: Seagate Ironworlf Pro 20TB X2
