Subtitles slow to appear on Samsung TV - spiny4048 - 2023-06-29

Hey all,

When I play a video on my Samsung TV, it takes subtitles about a minute to appear. It takes less than 10s when playing on Firefox on my PC. This is mostly just annoying, but I would like to try to understand what is happening in case there is something simple I can do to fix this.

Some details about my setup:
  • I'm running Jellyfin (10.8.10, Linux, Arm) on a (3b+) raspberry pi (Linux raspberrypi 6.1.21-v7+)
  • I've installed a Jellyfin client app (Jellyfin for Tizen 0.1.0) on my Samsung TV
  • My library is currently on my Windows machine, I've made the folder a network share
  • I've mounted the library on the pi and also configured the Jellyfin libraries with shared network folders

Details about the media:
  • MKV file
  • ASS (Advanced Sub Station Alpha) subtitle format
  • about 24 mins long

I can tell from the dashboard that Jellyfin isn't transcoding, it says "Direct playing - The source file is entirely compatible with this client, and the session is receiving the file without modifications." for the client app's card.

The subtitles show up immediately when I play the file directly thought the TV's native shared folder source.

Any ideas? Could the issue be with the client app? It seemed pretty simple, just a wrapper for the 10.8.z release.

If you've made it this far.. thanks for reading :-D

Same issue here with an LG TV using the WebOS app.

Did you find any solution?

The TV is probably unable to handle the ASS subs since they are rendered locally. I have a newish 4K Sony Android TV and ASS subs can cause the playback frame rate to drop. Plain ASS subs? Fine. Fancy subs with effects for opening/closing credits? Brings my TV to its knees.
