stuttering while playing high bitrate videos - ramdon.gorsey - 2024-09-17

I get stuttering video (sub 1sec lag every few seconds, depending on the video file) on clients (stuttering is similar on those clients):
- brave browser (local network via ethernet 1Gbit)
- lg web os app (local network, about USB 2.0 speeds, usb-eth adapter used because TV has only 100Mbit NIC and USB2.0 and it gets about 300Mbit, maybe slightly more)

It plays nice on (I can even make it run 2x without stuttering) :
- firefox browser (same PC as brave browser)
- android app and wifi

Stuttering occurs (or does not depending on a client) with or without transcoding.

server is docker on Unraid (linux) on local network with Intel UHD Graphics P630 with transcoding set up.

I tried a few things like changing transcoding settings but it lags even when direct play if I am not mistaken. Any ideas how to troubleshoot this more? Some things don't work on my tv app (other audio than true hd, speeding up) on some files so could not test them.

Try switching the TV to WiFi. TV makers skimp on the USB and ethernet ports on their TVs. Good WiFi 5+ should be more than fast enough to handle the video and will probably be faster and more stable than your USB to ethernet adapter.

Since it is direct playing on the TV, your GPU/transcoding isn't a factor.

streaming games 4k via gamestream protocol using usb-eth adapter was more stable than via wifi or builtin eth for me but I will try it out.

I checked that I had wifi turned on. When I turned it off and played a film it was ok but I could not test it thoroughly. I'll try to test soon.
Any ideas why firefox plays nice while chrome-based (tested chromium and brave) not? HW acceleration is turned on in brave (lags worse without it).

Network performance? Better client performance? Firefox may be getting a transcoded stream. AFAIK, Firefox doesn't support HEVC, period.

ok, I checked the browsers and both need transcoding. And firefox happily plays in 4h while brave(chromium) struggles at 1080p and plays 4k in slow-motion style + some additional lags. Both transcoded to H.264. Transcoding framerate is displayed as 52fps on both browsers (53 for 1080p).
Could not test the TV now. I will try with a better router but that much difference across different clients troubles me.

Installed chrome and performance is on a par with brave (and H.264 is used also).
