Newbie setting up Jellyfin on Windows. http://SERVER_IP:8096 is unable to connect - crambles - 2024-11-09

Complete newbie here trying to follow the quick start guide (https://jellyfin.org/docs/general/quick-start/) on my Windows PC. I installed the Jellyfin software and am on step three. I found my ipv4 address by looking in ipconfig/all on the command line. I tried navigating to http://my.ip.address:8096 and it says "Firefox can’t establish a connection to the server at my.ip.address:8096"

After an initial search I went into my firewall settings and clicked "allow an app through firewall" and tried just making the Jellyfin line private and not public. That didn't solve the issue. Now when I go look in the same spot I have three options for Jellyfin server, two that have private checked and one that has public checked. It seems like every time I switch the group to private and close it makes another public one.

Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

Stop Jellyfin before making that change.

Terrific! That worked beautifully, thanks!

One more question if you could point me in the right direction. I installed Jellyfin on my Chromecast and am trying to get it connected. My computer and Chromecast are both on the same WiFi network. I entered my IP address in the Chromecast Jellyfin app and it isn't connecting, saying "connection timed out." Let me know if you have any ideas.

On the server click on Start > type Resource Monitor > click on the Network tab > expand the Listening ports table. Find jellyfin.exe on port 8096. What does it say for the Firewall status column?

It says "not allowed, not restricted"

So you probably did not properly allow jellyfin through the Windows Firewall. It should be "Allowed, not restricted".

Weird, I'm following those instructions exactly but I can't get this to work. I removed the Jellyfin lines from the allowed apps list on the firewall, turned off Jellyfin autostart and restarted my computer. I booted it back up and opened Jellyfin, selected only private networks as being allowed, and it still says "not allowed, not restricted".

Do you have another application that provides a firewall service? Norton? McAfee? Bitwarden?

The only firewall I think I have is the one that comes with Windows, Windows Defender. I DO have Bitwarden installed because I use it to store my passwords but if it also acts as a firewall then it is news to me!
