    So, I found the solution, and it turns out that debian's firmware-misc-nonfree package lacked the dg2_huc_gsc.bin firmware file. I manually put the file in /lib/firmware/i915/ and transcoding now works perfectly.

    I'm going to update the subject of the thread and mark it as solved so that others can find it as well.

    Seems the upcoming versions of this package will contain this file, hope they get backported soon, as it would have saved me a few hours of digging.
