Nvidia GTX 970 STRIX for transcoding

I need som guidence, im about to buy and older GPU a Nvidia GTX Strix 970: https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/as...i-oc.b3049

The specs for transcoding seems fine for me, but does anybody know about when the GPU is idle, if the power consumption goes down? Ive been told that Intel Arc 380 dosent, why this is a benefit.

Next, is this a good card? Price is cheap, and mostly for testing.. Currently i only have experience with Intels QSV.

If you are buying an Nvidia GPU for transcoding, stick with 1000 series and newer (except the GT1030). They have MUCH better codec support.

Something else to consider, the 700 series driver updates were discontinued. Which means that the 900 series is next to be discontinued.

If your motherboard supports ACPI, idle power consumption won't be that high for Intel Arc.

Okay, thanks, but do you know the idle power usage of an Intel Arc 380 compared to when active?
Ive just been told Nvidia is much better when idle, but im considering Intel more, due to quality..

I don't know. Intel's GPU tools don't report power usage for Arc GPU.

Newer Nvidia cards are definitely better than Arc GPUs when it comes to idle power usage. But the 970 is a very old card. Much less efficient all around.

But, most importantly, the 970 has very limited codec support.

If you must get an Nvidia GPU, 1000 series and newer. GTX 1050's are also very cheap.
