Continue watching shows multiple instances of media when different versions exist

Hi there,

I have a number of different media items which have multiple versions (different resolutions etc) and when browsing the library they appear grouped as expected, but on the JF home screen the 'continue watching' section will show multiple instances of a given piece of media when more than one version exists, despite only one version being played. This is also passed to external players which are accessing JF. This is a recently developed issue. Any idea how I can remedy this?

Known issue. For me, this only happens when multiple versions are not set up correctly, such as being in different folders or not following the proper naming scheme. See here for instructions on how to set up multiple versions properly.

Happens to me with two separate libraries but the same movie as identified by Jellyfin. Partially why I'm reformatting my libraries to have mutually exclusive HD and 4K libraries (i.e., the same movie does not exist in both).

In this instance they're using the convention 'Media Name - Version Name' and are stored within the same directory alongside one another. Only the primary media items are within the top level of an item's directory, all extras etc are stored in subdirectories.

According to the Github issue page this has been ongoing for years, which is odd as this has only cropped up for me very recently (library is ~one year old).

I've seen this happen with people who have the correct naming scheme as well. Even though my multiple versions are set up properly and only one version appears in the "Continue Watching" section, it's still not working correctly. There's another bug where "Continue Watching" always plays the default version (the first one in the list), regardless of which version you were actually watching. This is just something I have come to live with as not working correctly.

Sorry to say, having separate libraries won't resolve the issue. I have a separate test library, and whenever I add a movie there that's already in another library, both versions always show up in the Continue Watching section.

That's the mutually exclusive part. Only add movies in 4K if they don't exist in HD and vice versa. Not a solution for everyone, but with the AV1 encoding I've been doing recently, I'm super satisfied with my HD encodes and only have a few select series and movies I've reserved for my 4K library.
