I would recommnd a Raspberry pi 4 or 5 with ssd (pi5 has ability to use m2 nvme ssd) - and install LibreElec + JellyCon

I use an Apple TV 4K with the Infuse app hooked to my jellyfin server and it is pure bliss. Direct plays everything I've ever thrown at it. But I am also not using video files with lossless audio codecs. That's the one thing the shield has over the Apple TV

Is there anything that AppleTV has over the Shield? Doesn't sound like they are ever going to bring out a new model for the Shield.

You can install Kodi on your computer and add the Netflix addon for testing. Your tv remote should also work fine to navigate around on LibreElec

I have nvidia shield 2015 model and it plays everything except movies that are with dolby vision only (no hdr), those have weird colors (obviously), but plays fine every sound codec. I think the newest model nvidia shield pro can play dolby vision. Everyone recommends the pro, not the tube.

I do hear good things about the Sheild Pro but I had also read that it does suffer from motion judder and manually setting the frame rate or maybe that's been fixed now? So let me get this right the Shield has a dedicated Jellyfin app but with AppleTV there is no Jellyfin app, you have you use Apples own video player Infuse.

Currently we do not have an official app for Apple TV. The Infuse app is a good third-party app that has Jellyfin support but it is paid and closed source, which might not be ideal for everyone.
The Android TV app (maintained by me) is stable and used by over half a million users. If you encounter issues with it you can use our forum/chat to get help with troubleshooting and if it ends up being an actual bug you can report it on GitHub and we'll work on fixing it. There have been some reports in the past with Nvidia Shield devices (which I haven't experienced myself on my shield pro) but I believe most of them are either fixed in the app or need to be fixed by Nvidia themselves but in many cases workarounds are available. ![]() |
