Before I submit an issue at the jellyfin roku github, I figured I'd post here to see if anyone had any insight. It seems that after a recent update of the roku jellyfin client, subtitles have gone all wonky. In most cases they just don't work at all. I have checked to make sure the closed captioning is set to "on always" Has anyone seen any similar issues? They work fine when I use a browser. I've fiddled with various settings to no avail (although the un-fiddled with settings were working fine before the roku app update).

Weirdly, they seem to have worked fine on a movie file I tried recently but none of my shows will work. They all seem to be similar MKV files with embedded subtitle tracks. I wish I could provide more details but there doesn't seem to be a pattern other than that they worked before and now they mostly don't. Thanks (hopefully) in advance!

Need a little more info about a few things. How are you running Jellyfin and what's the host OS and specs? Can you provide an ffprobe or mediainfo on one of the files that doesn't appear to work? CC in Roku doesn't always translate to subtitles in Jellyfin, as you have to set the subtitle track before playback OR enable the correct track after playback begins.

My guess? Most of the files that aren't working have embedded subs that aren't being extracted quickly enough by your server or they're PGS subs, which require transcoding to burn in on Roku (and won't be enabled with CC on always).

I am also having this issue. Subtitles are no longer displaying on Roku. I am not sure which Roku client update recently caused this but I just noticed this a couple of days ago.

    Using Roku client 3.0.10
    Windows server client 10.10.7

The files affected are mkv files with embedded subtitles. These are files that have worked without issue in the past. I have tried all of the usual troubleshooting that the original poster tried but to no avail. Thanks for any help with this.

It seems most likely to be a problem with the most recent release of the roku client. I'm having problems with mkv's with embedded subtitles, but not every one. In most cases, movies seem to work fine, but shows do not. Shows will also not work with external SRT subs. I have one series that works fine, and as far as I can tell it has the same embedded subs as the ones that don't work but for whatever reason the subs are rendered as images.

In this issue, the poster says they can see subtitles if they choose the "force transcode (remux disabled)" option, but this does not work for me.

Possibly a different issue, but I am also having problems with subtitles on the Roku client (not embedded, though--the video file is mkv, but I'm using external .srt subs. The system sees them and says it's running them on the Roku client. When I play the file through Jellyfin on the server using the web client, I see the subs).
