what i mean is, clients tend to be cheaper options and clients that can do direct play tend to have better quality, making it a better investment

jellyfin is available for ios and most other platforms; i'm not an ios user so i'm not sure they do hevc but typically an actual client is better than a browser
(with the drawback that some clients are actually browsers then it's the same, obviously)

i use android mostly, my devices vary widely but all of them do hevc playback, transcoding is only needed with some clients and some audio formats
with my android clients they all cost under $150 (except 2) which is far cheaper than a new gpu
