I tried to create a new library that would just use TVDB metadata. I put the specials in that library and scanned, got the right metadata no problem. Then I went to my user display settings and added that library to be merged with the other tv libraries. That kind of worked, but not really. The series was a separate entity. I was hoping it would get merged like when you have multiple folders in one library. But it did not.
Looks like I will probably have to go with TheDreadPirate's advice. Switch the metadata provider order, scan, then I think I will lock those episodes.
What I finally ended up doing was using the TVDB library I had to scan (you could do this by switching provider order too), but I also turned on NFO writing and saving images in the media folder. I tweaked those NFOs slightly to not reference the episode images by URL, and to set lockdata to true. I then moved the video files, NFOs, and images back into my main library. Now I have the correct metadata with IMDB and TVDB ids, and images. They show up correctly in next up now as well.
