I reverted to 5085 using a "clean" install option to purge the previous driver. Rebooted and confirmed in device manager that the driver version was accurate.
Re-enabled intel transcoding and playback lasted about 8 seconds before stopping. Same error in the logs.

Maybe this all means I need to install Ubuntu and just use linux...
