Sadly you're going to get hit with a "we don't support that software, go to another support channel"
I really would like to see a community ran sub reddit where we can, as a community of users not devs, discuss these kind of things. If I recall when they made the switch to the forums the devs said they were not against that, just that they wouldn't be responding there like they were in the official sub reddit (locked indefinitely). I really have no interest in being a reddit mod, and it may be a slow going trying to build the numbers the old sub had. Just throwing the idea out there.
As for your issue, I think your assumptions are correct that you would still have to download them locally. You could set up something like MUMC (https://github.com/terrelsa13/MUMC) to delete the files after a certain play count or date, if space on your drive is am issue. Hope that helps.
