I've had this issue on files with 7.1 audio using the android TV App. Exoplayer will just error with the message you mentioned, whilst LibVLC will play them back perfectly.
The solution for me is to tell the android app to "downmix to stereo" for the audio.
A reason i don't like using LibVLC is that it still only transcodes to H264, whilst Exoplayer will transcode to H265 which is much better for my family members who are watching over an internet connection.
