Just gonna bump this issue up again. It’s now around 6 years after the bug was reported. Many android tv client updates were published. None of them fixed basic subtitle support.
Android tv maintainer said he re-wrote the playback code which would fix the subtitle support, but of course it was launched for music playback first, not for video playback…. Makes sense since we all know jellyfin is used mostly for music, not video /s
Workaround is:
1) use Plex
2) use Emby
3) use Kodi
4) use jellyfin for Kodi addon
