I just learned this due to my own issues with the LG WebOS client forcing transcode due to subtitle incompatibility, but for some reason the LG built in media player (which the WebOS client seems to rely on) can only handle a couple of different subtitle formats, particularly .srt, .ass, and .ssa, either separate files or embedded inside your .mkv container.
If this happens, since the player cant play them directly, it will either force your server to transcode and burn them in if it can, or just wont play them. Since you cant see them, its very likely that the TV itself cant play the format embedded in the container.
