Subtitles aren’t working well since version 10.9.2.
If there’s no forced (foreign) subs under your preferred language, it will play the next one on the list. Not sure how long will it take to fix this, I opened a bug report.
I wouldn’t be surprised that this fonction that your describing isn’t working either.
