That entirely depends on how online metadata providers organize the series. A good example would be Doctor Who. Same show, but the seasons prior to the 2005 revival are listed separately from 2005+. Different TMDB IDs, starting from season 1 for the 2005 revival, etc.
So go to TMDB and look up your show and see how it is organized.
