For example, you may have a rip in 4k but frequently watch it on a phone at 720p. With the raw 4k, your server will transcode it behind the scenes every time you watch it on your phone. If you use handbrake to transcode it to a lower resolution, you can store that on your server and select the 720p version when you are watching on your phone.
Good point! This functionality is also useful for cases where there is more than one version of the film, (Theatrical vs. Extended. B&W vs. Colorized, etc.). It might not be until the weekend, but I already have some additions/clarifications planned. There is a great deal of information in my personal notes that I want to get cleaned up and integrated into the guide - tools and documentation that can save a ton of time when transforming media.
