I personally ONLY use refurbished hardware that is decommissioned from professional environnement after > 5 years.
This include HDD and SDD disks.
I always take Dell servers and their 8-12 Dell disks, that i reconfigure in several grapes of RAID-1 (SDD) or RAID-5 (HDD). The RAIDs are running on hardware via Dell's IDRAC.
I upgrade the hardware (server and disks) every 3-4 years, only to get better CPU power/electrical consomption rate, and its currently my 5th server (and disks) installment.
--> I NEVER faced a disk failure over the last 10 years.
So the statement to " NEVER get a drive second hand" is largely a myth nowadays. It all depends on the original quality. You will hardly have any issue with good professional datacenter material that is 5-10 years old, in the context of re-using it for a home server
