In this instance they're using the convention 'Media Name - Version Name' and are stored within the same directory alongside one another. Only the primary media items are within the top level of an item's directory, all extras etc are stored in subdirectories.
According to the Github issue page this has been ongoing for years, which is odd as this has only cropped up for me very recently (library is ~one year old).
