To answer your question, yes. High-bitrate media causes all sorts of issues, particularly over WiFi. If the file needs to be transcoded to be compatible with your client (e.g., no 4K support, requires tonemapping, incompatible codec/s), your hardware is shouldering the burden so that could be a bottleneck as well. In some cases -- webOS for one -- weird idiosyncrasies cause issues. The latter is the only case I've seen so far and it's a really esoteric problem for webOS.
