I can't agree on the play button. Your reasoning isn't without merit but from a design standpoint it's just, well, unpleasant. But it's your theme so feel free to take the criticism under advisement. I'm not a big fan of the rounded corners and stroke outline for the movie posters either. My personal preference.

A question I did have, is the colour theme something that automatically adjusts based on a dominant colour from something within the selection or is it just setting one default colour for the entire skin itself?

Oh do you have the css code to just freeze the left pane in place? I'd add that to my default theme in a heartbeat.
