How did you set up your external access? Port forwarding? Would definitely recommend against that in favor of a more secure solution.
To dig a little further we'd need to know your server OS. The generic answer is to check your firewall, open the necessary port there (e.g., ufw, Windows firewall). Other complex issues can include various ISP-implemented barriers to get around, but those are a bit out of my depth.
If possible, reverse proxy is more secure and flexible than port forwarding. It can certainly be intimidating at first, but there are easy solutions depending on your host and installation method.
