Some Android TV devices seem to only work with libVLC. I've seen a lot of Firestick users with a similar issue you are describing and exclusively using libVLC was the only solution.
Not not every device implements Android the same and there must be something with your device's implementation of Android that is breaking exoplayer. Same with Fire OS.
