I'm curious what people use as a media device.

I've been looking into getting a micro PC and using that, but i dont want to run Windows on it.. in fact, I want as lightweight an OS as possible JUST to run Jellyfin (any maybe a web browser for youtube).

Ive seen LibreELEC, but that just seems to be Kodi that can connect directly to your media (and not use Jellyfin as a player).

So im curious what my options are. (id kinda want to avoid using a R-Pi just because of its modular nature makes it look like a messy setup).

An Intel N100 mini PC would be great. The Beelink S12 is less than $200 and has excellent codec compatibility for accelerated decoding.
    Jellyfin 10.10.7 (Docker)
    Ubuntu 24.04.2 LTS w/HWE
    Intel i3 12100
    Intel Arc A380
    OS drive - SK Hynix P41 1TB
    Storage
4x WD Red Pro 6TB CMR in RAIDZ1

I was thinking something about that size, but was more curious about the OS setup on it. Is there a 'standalone' OS just to run Jellyfin, or will a more general Mediacenter OS have a Jellyfin plug-in/applet?

Also, i was guessing that all the N100 micro pc's would perform about the same. I was keeping an eye on this one (https://www.amazon.com/GMKtec-Mini-Intel...B0CCDPDBX6) in either the 256 or the 512 version.

If you really want that, you install Kodi

Yes, but there are Kodi add-ons to have it interface with Jellyfin.
    Jellyfin 10.10.7 (Docker)

weird question, which im sure the answer to will be 'no' but..

is it possible to load an entirely different OS on to an Apple TV?

On this. I was planning to pick up an Intel Arc GPU to add to my server for transcoding.

Just install Linux Mint. You can try it out on a live USB first to see if you like it. Really puts Windows to shame.
I just installed JF Server and runs great

    Linux Mint & Win 10
    JF latest on both
    Intel i7 on both

Im not going to host Jellyfin on the media device.. Just use it to pull From my jellyfin server, which is on my NAS. The media device that will connect to my TV will only server to play the media from it, possibly also have a web browsers in it to do light-medium web browsing for other video sites (prime video, Youtube if i can get an adblocker in place for it).
