Out of the cards I already have

So my Jellyfin server already has a GTX1070 and it's working just fine. However, due to the relatively high TDP of the card (150W) I have been considering switching to one of a couple of other cards I have kicking around, but I'm not sure about their transcoding capabilities. I can't seem to find very reliable or succinct information on the subject via simply googling.

The two cards I have kicking around and have been considering switching to, are a GTX750TI (75W IIRC) and an RX550 (50W?). I know the 750Ti vastly outperforms the RX550 in gaming applications, but which is better for transcoding? And will either one transcode as well as the 1070? Which codex or transcoding methods would I be sacrificing switching to the older card? Am I better off sticking to the 1070?

    Any suggestions?

Generally speaking, AMD should be avoided considering it features the poorest encode quality of all supported hardware. Here's the table from the documentation:

    Apple ≥ Intel ≥ Nvidia >>> AMD

Depending on your media, you may want to stick with the 1070 since it can encode and decode H.265, unlike the 750 Ti; unless all your content is H.264 or you're willing to convert everything over. Overall, the card you're using at the moment simply has better video codec support all around. You can find all the info here. I'd also advise taking a look at the hardware selection section of the documentation, and the NVIDIA page.

Unfortunately many cards featuring good encoding tend to have increased power consumption, even on idle and without a graphical environment. Such is the case and a known drawback with Intel's excellent Arc series (for video encoding).

Of all the choices, the 1070 is, by far, the best. Yes, the max TDP is 150W, but encoding doesn't come close to using that much and Nvidia is pretty good with idle power consumption. It has MUCH better codec support and much better quality over the 750Ti and RX550.

And you already have it, so no money spent.

If you were to buy a new GPU just for transcoding, Intel Arc is top of the list. That's assuming you live in a country with cheap power.

Looks like I might as well stick with the 1070. Thanks.
