I've recently started using Jellyfin and have a problem with subtitles... I just can't disable them on my TV even when they are OFF in the menu. From what I understood they are burned in because my TV doesn't support their format or something. I have nothing against video transcoding but I would like to disable all subtitles everywhere without manually stripping them from each file.

There must be some setting that I just can't find, this should be quite basic functionality...

If the subtitle is marked as "forced", AFAIK every client will honor that tag and use the subtitles regardless of your settings. If the subtitles are "forced", you can use ffmpeg or MKVToolnix to remove the "forced" tag.

I, for myself and three users, just went into each user profile settings list. Those that didn't want them I set "Subtitle mode" to none.

I have this issue too - setting to None for IPTV streams still shows subtitles/closed captions.

Is there a workaround eg in the stream definition file?

There are no subtitle controls for livetv sources, either on or off.

This is the way. WebOS and Roku both respect this setting as far as I know. Default and forced subtitles are OFF always unless you turn them on.
