I've gone through every menu I can find, and searched the web to the extent of my abilities and still can't come up with an answer. Does anyone know of a way to allow or force transcoding over the internet, but prevent it entirely over LAN? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Transcoding only happens when the client cannot play the file directly, this is either due to its playback capabilities/available bandwidth or a software issue.

If you're the one managing the LAN side (i.e a home environment), just make sure that all the devices are setup correctly.
