I've finally found the issue, so for anyone else dealing with this in order -
direct play only works if the jmp installed on say ur computer or a phone or a chromecast if that particular device has support for the codecs ur using in ur media
this includes
- video
- audio
- subtitles
the reason my chromecast kept transcoding and downgrading the quality of my media was because my subtitles were in ASS. format - chromecast doesnt support it natively
hence why i didnt have this issue on my computer.
additionally you want to make sure ur client settings and play back dont limit ur bandwidth and that they are not forcing the transcode.
transcoding is a fallback feature that is used when direct stream is unavailable
additionally jellyfin will limit bandwidth based on ur connection type
if your using an internal connection (local wifi) it will not limit by default
however if your using a vpn or accessing the network from the outsite it will limit ur connection
Lastly, personally i still think jellyfin is the best streaming software out there for personal use; and that comes down to more that its features. its community as a whole is very helpful so thanks to TheDreadedPirate for guiding me to my answers and all those reddit nerds who helped me delve deeper.
