    hey

like any other parent i have an incountable mountain of family-videos that just reside on the file server but almost never get watched
synology photos is nice, but the aging nas does not offer a satisfying couch-experience when searching for videos

does anyone have experience with jellyfin and family videos?
just create a new library, point it to the family-video folder and enjoy?
or is jellyfin the wrong tool for the job and i should rather go for something like immich?

Jellyfin should work just fine. Turn off most of the metadata providers (maybe keep the extractors) and pretty much any library type will work. Jellyfin uses folder structure and filename to help organize so hopefully there's a naming convention for your files.

If using 10.8.x create a library with the 'Photos' type. If using 10.9 (next release) use 'Home Videos and Photos'
These are the same library types, we just renamed it for 10.9 to be more descriptive

I use the mixed movies and shows library type for this and works great. Just turn off all metadata providers.

This was one of the main goals of my Jellyfin server. I have used the mixed movies and tv library type. It's been great!
After a bit of trial and error, and having our movies auto-named to the most bizarre titles I worked out a system.
I turn off all metadata scrapers and only have the Embedded Image fetcher and screengrabber toggled on.

For file naming conventions, YYYY-MM-DD-Descriptive Title-originaltitle.ext. The original title portion is used when I upload a raw unedited video and helps me with any necessary detective work sould I want to trackdown the original file more easily for further edits.
I have been using the tags to add actors (Family and friends) as well as genre.
My biggest concern with working so meticulously with the custom meta data is when i finally migrate my library to a new server.
Example of my library cover art attached.

Hi there, here's my system, for future reference for anyone looking for a solution.

I came from Kodi, where all my family videos have been created following this logic:

VideoFamille (this is the folder added in Jellyfin)
    └── Home Videos (i.e a single show)
           ├── Season 2010
           │  └── S2010E01 - Name.mkv
           │    └── S2010E01 - Name.nfo
           └── Season 2011
               └── S2011E01 - Name.mkv
               └── S2011E01 - Name.nfo

Inside the root folder (Home Videos), I have the following files:
    season 2010-poster.jpg
    season 2011-poster.jpg
    banner.jpg
    poster.jpg
    fanart.jpg
    tvshow.nfo

It works great so far, but it probably needs some tuning (I guess I should put poster.jpg in each seasoin subfolder instead?)
